Livelihood and well-being survey

Monday 8 March 2021

When COVID-19 became a reality, communities in coastal Kenya who depend on fishing and subsistence living from coastal ecosystems were hard hit to sustain their livelihoods.   Our Marine Protected Areas Governance project in partnership with the NGO A Rocha sought to respond to the situation.

A project was created to carry out a livelihoods and wellbeing survey, provide basic finance to survive food and income shortages, communicate COVID-19 messages, and review the success of existing alternative livelihoods initiatives.  A community ‘Marine Scouts’ programme was also developed which provided unemployed and less-educated youth over 18 years with training and stipend pay.  The results of the survey also indicated that 40% of the survey respondent‘s livelihoods were dependent on the marine area.

The project was funded by the UK Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Scottish Funding Council.
