Launch of Governance baseline approach report for Kenyan MPA

Tuesday 26 October 2021

A Rocha Kenya have published a key output of our Community Capabilities and Marine Protected Area Governance GCRF project, see: https://www.arocha.or.ke/news/community-capabilities-and-marine-protected-areas/

This report has arisen from sustained engagement with key communities including 3 workshops and 5 community meetings during 2019-2021.  The governance baseline approach is a diagnostic tool which enables a partnership of organisations to come together and build common understanding about social and ecological change in marine protected areas.  As a project we have developed this approach from the original LOICZ tool, refining many of the diagnostics and adding new components such as one on nature, livelihoods and wellbeing.  The final report details information and evidence collated from across a range of inputs, which will inform key decisions on how to implement the MPA management plan, and also other initiatives to respond to challenges and develop opportunities for pro-conservation livelihoods.

Particular thanks to Judith Ochieng, Allan Majalia, Stanley Baya, Colin Jackson and many of the A Rocha Kenya team for developing this work in collaboration with their local stakeholders.
